The difficulty of port operators in learning the parabolic model when operating an RTG (hoist/trolley) crane

The operation of RTG (Hoist/Trolley) cranes in port terminals is a complex task that requires specialized skills and knowledge to ensure efficient and safe execution. Port activity, particularly in Panama and other regions, has experienced significant growth since the inauguration of the Panama Canal and the implementation of the container system in the 1950s, substantially transforming the design and operation of ports. RTG crane operators face several challenges during their training, including inadequate training, the complexity of the parabolic operation model, and a lack of motivation. A study conducted with 60 operators from the INADEH Logistics and Port Training Center in Panama revealed that 65% of the participants did not receive sufficient training, 40% found the parabolic model extremely complex, and 25% lacked motivation to learn. RTG cranes perform several critical movements, including vertical lifting (hoist), horizontal translation (trolley), and the movement of the crane along the quay (gantry). New productivity strategies aim to optimize these movements by combining them simultaneously, which reduces operation time and increases the overall efficiency of the terminal. The training of RTG crane operators has been enhanced with the use of simulators, which are part of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). These simulators replicate real operational scenarios, allowing operators to train in a safe and controlled environment. This approach accelerates the training process and significantly improves productivity and safety in port operations.
