Information centric networks as the Internet architecture of the future

Abstract

The inclusion of the Internet in all aspects of daily life and its constant growth has shown its importance, but at the same time, also its limitations. The constraints present in today's Internet architecture made the urgent need for change evident to researchers and began the search for new designs. Motivated by the fact that today's Internet is dominated by search and content-oriented activities, the Information Centric Networking (ICN) paradigm emerges as a new design for the Internet of the future. ICN's approach proposes changing the customer-centric model of the Internet to one focused on efficient data collection. This article reviews the ICN paradigm as one of the most outstanding proposals for an Internet of the future. Through the characterization of the main limitations of the current Internet model, the possibilities of ICN to cover them are exposed. The main studies carried out on the integration of ICN with some of the main technologies of the current Internet are shown, demonstrating the advantages of their union.
